The Arts
National Fine Arts Program
The Teen Center has its local Art Show each January, where judges select pieces in each of the ten categories
to represent the Club at the Southeast Regional Boys & Girls Clubs Art Show in March.

Ashley Brown was named as a 2004 Southeast Regional winner in the category of 13-15 year old printmaking for her piece, "Summer Leaves."  Also in printmaking category, Jimmy White's "Summer Leaves Fall" was a 2004 Southeast Regional winner in the 16-18 year old category.  Both of these pieces are currently being judged at the National Boys & Girls Clubs Art Show.

Chaz McNeil, 14, was named as a 2003 Southeast Regional Art winner for his Mixed Media "Sea Party."  Chaz's work went on to the National Boys & Girls Clubs Art Show.  Chaz was a Boys & Girls Clubs National Art winner in 2002 for his pastel entitled "Glass."

Jimmy White, 15, was also a Boys & Girls Clubs National Art winner in 2002 with his watercolor entitled, "In the Meadows."

Character & Leadership Development
Youth of the Year

On February 2, 2007 twenty-four judges from the community had to decide the Youth of the Year for each Club, and then the overall winner in the RBC Centura Youth of the Year competition.

Other finalists chosen  were Brandon J., Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club; Thomas T., Zebulon Boys & Girls Club; Quawinda P., Washington Elementary Boys & Girls Club; Melanie P., Raleigh Girls Club.

Bill Bunn from RBC Centura was the keynote speaker at the dinner that evening.

In 2002, Raleigh Girls Club member, Keosha Johnson was honored to be selected the North Carolina Youth of the Year.

In 1991, the Raleigh Boys Club was the home of the National Youth of the Year, Erick May.

Camp Challenge Cleanup Day
Four Teen Center members worked hard at the annual Camp Challenge Cleanup Day on October 25.  Byron Laws, Chaz McNeil, Shelisha Ejimakor, and Kendric Hopkins cleaned the pool, pool house, did landscaping, etc. to make the camp better for next summer.  Camp Challenge is a week-long, overnight camp that our Clubs have sent middle school members to for the past five summers.

Teen Leadership Conference
Six teens from the Teen Center attended the Teen Leadership Conference at Camp Sea Gull in Arapahoe, NC September 5-7.  They joined Boys & Girls Club teens from across the North Carolina to take part in a number of leadership training exercises.

Keystone Club
Keystone Clubs are chartered small group leadership development clubs for young people ages 14-18. Keystone members elect officers, choose their own activities and plan and implement community service projects.  A national charter entitles a Keystone Club to participate in regional and national Keystone conferences.  The TEEN Supreme Keystone Club program is sponsored nationally by the Taco Bell Foundation.

Education & Career Development

December Career Month
In December, professionals came throughout the month to share their stories, career paths, goals and gadgets with members ages 11-18.  Members had the opportunity to join these small group talks and ask questions about health careers, owning your own business, cosmetology, law enforcement, software engineering, electrical engineering, sales, and more.  Thank you to all of the volunteers who made great presentations to the members.  Another burst of career exploration is being planned for Spring Break in March.

Lichtin Scholarship Program

Four years ago, when they were still in fifth grade, five members were selected as Lichtin Scholars.  As long as they keep their grades up, remain active in the Boys & Girls Clubs, stay out of trouble, and participate in service projects, scholarships will be provided for them to attend college.  Now sophomores in high school, these members are excelling in school, and are leaders in their Club, schools, and churches.  Also as a part of this program, these teens have experienced a different one-week residential summer camp for three years, and have other programs planned specifically for them.

ScholarShop
ScholarShop is a program that prepares and motivates youth to reach their full potential by exploring post-secondary opportunities of careers and education.  Locally, ScholarShop is sponsored by Cargill, and meets every Thursday in the Teen Center.  Members work through a variety of lessons, many using computer software and the internet, to assess their skills and interests, explore the world of work, and learn about colleges.

CLUBService
This program, the result of a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Corporation for National Service (AmeriCorps), provides financial education awards to Club members and alumni ages 17-24 who serve their Clubs and communities.  CLUBService recognizes young people's service, helps them access higher education opportunities and encourages them to pursue future careers as Club professionals.  The Teen Center currently has four alumni who are currently paying for college with their AmeriCorps funds, in addition to one member who is working to accumulate her hours.

Health & Life Skills
SMART Moves
The SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) prevention and education program addresses the problems of drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. Based on proven techniques, the program uses a team approach involving Club staff, peer leaders, parents and community representatives. More than simply emphasizing a "Say No" message, the program teaches young people ages 6-15 how to say no by involving them in discussion and role-playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal: to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior.  SMART Moves meets in the Teen Center every Monday.

SMART Girls
An outgrowth of the popular and effective SMART Moves program, SMART Girls is a health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program for girls ages 10-15. The program meets each Wednesday, and is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential. The SMART Girls program is sponsored nationally by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation, Inc.

Street SMART
Boys & Girls Clubs of America's Street SMART initiative, funded nationally by THE ALLSTATE FOUNDATION, consists of three components designed to help young people ages 11-13 effectively resist gangs and violence, resolve conflicts and be positive peer helpers in their communities. It also allows them the opportunity to hold annual events that celebrate anti-gang, anti-violence themes. Street SMART meets in the Teen Center each Monday.

Teen Spirit
Teen Spirit is a program brought to the Teen Center every Tuesday by the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition.  This program allows teens to learn more about themselves and others.  In this program, teens learn a lot about life skills and how to handle them.
Teens also get to go on fun trips.   At the end of each year, teens are invited to go on a trip with their parent(s) and the rest of Teen Spirit to another state or theme park.

Sports, Fitness & Recreation

Basketball League
Each year the Boys & Girls Club sponsors a Basketball League for members aged 6-18.  Registration for the season begins in November, and the season begins in December and concludes with tournaments in March.

Fitness Authority
FITNESS AUTHORITY, a program sponsored nationally by The Sports Authority, Inc., promotes fitness in all youth.  FITNESS AUTHORITY provides a fun-filled, motivating fitness experience for members.  There is a 12-week curriculum for each of three age groups: FITNESS SQUAD, 6-9; FITNESS MASTERS, 10-14; and FITNESS ALL-STARS, 15-18.  Weekly sessions cover every aspect of fitness, drawing upon themes of sports culture and history, self-esteem, nutrition and physical fitness.  The annual FITNESS AUTHORITY Club-Wide Pentathlon competition allows Club members of all ages to demonstrate and test their fitness levels.

Members work out to prepare for Fitness Authority, and our three Regional winners
