The Boys & Girls Clubs opened in Raleigh in 1967 as the
Raleigh Boys Club in an old church in the Historic Oakwood neighborhood.
Below left is the first Club; to the right is a bus trip in February, 1968.
1970
In 1973 the Boys Club started its summer day camping
program at Camp Charles M. Griffin. In 1978 the Boys Club moved to its
new clubhouse located at 605 Raleigh Boulevard.
1980
In 1986 the Club opened the Wake Forest Boys Club and
in 1987 changed its name to Boys & Girls Clubs when it opened the Raleigh
Girls Club in an old storefront on Glascock Street.
1990
In 1990 Camp Griffin was sold and a new camp was found:
Camp BTI, a 162-acre site in Nash
County. In 1992 the Girls Club moved into its new home at 701 Raleigh Boulevard
and in 1996 the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club moved into its new facility. In
1997, the Zebulon Boys & Girls Club was opened. In 1999 the Boys Club building
was renovated to include a co-ed Teen Center.
2000
During the past year, the Boys & Girls
Clubs served over 3,000 school-aged children and teens in Wake County.
2006-
2007
The sixth Boys &
Girls Club opened in November -- the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club located on
New Hope Church Road. The Club -- the Teen Center -- our seventh Club
opened in March, 2007.
